Police: Two killed in shooting at Maryland senior living facility

Two people are dead Friday after a shooting at a Maryland senior living facility near Washington, D.C., according to reports from CNN. Officials say a suspect is in custody.

The shooting occurred in the town of Capitol Heights at the Gateway Village National Church Residence, Prince George’s County police spokeswoman Julie Wright told CNN.

The two killed were employees at the facility, as confirmed by the senior living facility’s executive vice president, Michelle Norris, in a prepared statement.

The details of the shooting and names of the victims and suspect have not been released to the public.

Those who were able to walk were evacuated from the building as police responded to the scene, and those who were in wheelchairs were asked to remain stationary in their rooms, according to Wright.

A woman who was displaced by the shooting spoke to a reporter with the local ABC affiliate, WJLA, telling him, “I’m nervous now because my mother-in-law is still in the building on lockdown.”

Norris said in her prepared statement, “On behalf of the National Church Residences team, please know that we are extremely heartbroken by the events that occurred this morning at our affordable housing property Gateway Village.” 

She added, “We are proud of the heroic and swift actions of our staff to ensure that our residents were protected and kept safe.”

According to ABC News, Prince George’s County has surpassed 100 homicides for the year as of Thursday night.
