Lewandowski: Perez ‘doesn’t understand what’s going on in America’
Former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski early Sunday blasted the new chairman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), saying Tom Perez “doesn’t understand what’s going on in America.”
“They … had an opportunity to pick a candidate that understood what middle America is about and not someone who’s just concerned about the East Coast or West Coast,” Lewandowski said on “Fox News Sunday.”
“What we’ve seen is more of the same from the Democratic Party, which caused them to lose this election at the presidential level,” he added.
{mosads}“This is just a terrible decision for these guys,” Lewandowski, now a political consultant, said. “It is a huge move to the left.”
Perez, who served as Labor secretary in the Obama administration and as a civil rights attorney in the Justice Department, defeated Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) to become the next DNC chairman during a vote on Saturday in Atlanta.
Former Vice President Joe Biden and other key Obama administration figures supported Perez, who backed Hillary Clinton in the primary.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and many of his allies backed Ellison, the first-ever Muslim elected to Congress and a star on the left. Several Ellison supporters told The Hill last week that they are unsure if they can back Perez.
