McConnell: Russia controversy ‘certainly not helpful’ to Trump pushing his agenda

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Sunday suggested the continuing controversy over the Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election is distracting to President Trump’s agenda.

“It’s certainly not helpful,” McConnell said on “Fox News Sunday.”

“The president’s actual agenda has been really quite constructive.”

{mosads}McConnell pointed to the president’s Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch — whom McConnell called “fabulous” — and his proposals to move forward on tax reform.

“This is just what the country needs to get the kind of growth rate that would produce jobs and opportunity for the next generation,” he said.

The Kentucky Republican also dismissed calls for an independent commission to investigate Russian meddling in the presidential election.

“It’s just not necessary based on what we know now,” he said.

“We’ve got a bipartisan investigation underway. It’s called the Senate Intelligence Committee.”

McConnell said he hopes the Senate Intelligence Committee will find out what happened and then be able to issue a unanimous report.
