Billionaire philanthropist Tom Steyer said Sunday that he hasn’t determined whether he will seek the Democratic nomination for president in 2020.
“Let me stop you and say that I haven’t decided to run for president,” he said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” when asked what makes him a better nominee than other potential candidates.
He added, however, that his priorities as a candidate would include “unrigging the system.”
{mosads}“This system has been rigged for big corporations and people like me. And unrigging this system, it’s not about me. It’s about getting the needs of the people of the United States put first and foremost, which they are not,” he said.
Steyer last week released a list of “5 Rights” that he believes should be “essential protections” for Americans. They include “the right to an equal vote, “the right to clean air and water,” “the right to learn,” “the right to a living wage” and “the right to health.”
“Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd noted that the “5 Rights” appear to be a presidential campaign platform, but Steyer said Sunday that he would back an alternative candidate if someone has a similar vision to his.
“This is about the people of the United States, not the person,” he said. “If there is a movement to get in place something that we desperately need … I will be part of that movement, absolutely, 100 percent, one way or the other.”
Steyer during the interview also reiterated his call for the impeachment of President Trump. Steyer, who last year launched the Need to Impeach campaign, said Sunday that impeachment should be an “absolute first step” for House Democrats in the new Congress.
“I think there’s no question that this president has both met the grounds for impeachment and that it’s urgent to get him out of office,” he said.
