McCabe says Trump insult ‘bizarre and untrue’

Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe responded Sunday to President Trump calling him a “poor man’s J. Edgar Hoover,” calling it “bizarre and untrue.”

McCabe added during an interview on ABC’s “This Week” that it’s “not the first time” that Trump has said “bizarre and untrue things about me.”

But I will say that I don’t think there’s anything sad or unfortunate about speaking truth to power and telling the story that you lived and the things you saw and heard and the reasons behind the decisions you made. And that’s what I’ve tried to do,” McCabe said.

Trump made the remark to reporters last week, when he also called McCabe a “disgrace” and said he felt McCabe had “made a fool out of himself over the last couple of days.”

“He really looks to me like a poor man’s J. Edgar Hoover,” Trump added.

In the days leading up to those comments, McCabe made several comments critical of Trump during a media blitz to promote his new book, “The Threat: How the FBI Protects America in the Age of Terror and Trump.”

McCabe criticized Trump for “undermining the role of law enforcement” and suggested that Trump may be a Russian asset. He also said during an interview on CBS’s “60 Minutes” that Department of Justice officials considered invoking the 25th Amendment to remove the president from office, though he later walked back that remark.

McCabe was fired last year after an internal report found he lacked candor in interviews with investigators. He was planning to retire days later.
