Democratic candidates should make the 2020 election a referendum on President Trump’s “integrity,” an ex-Hillary Clinton spokeswoman said Sunday.
“At some point in the 2020 election, Democrats should make the election about integrity,” Karen Finney said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” Finney served as a spokeswoman during Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.
{mosads}Finney made the comment in response to remarks by 2020 Democratic candidate and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg.
“I think a lot of folks are waiting for some piece of evidence to come along that finally proves once and for all that [Trump] is not a good guy,” Buttigieg said Saturday at a Greenville, S.C., event, according to The Washington Post, urging candidates to consider why Trump was elected in 2016.
“And what they forget is that there are a lot of people where I live, and maybe a lot of people around here too, who, knowing that he’s not a good guy, walked in to the voting booth and voted to burn the house down because of some very deep issues that motivated them to send a message.”
Finney’s comments come while Washington is speculating about the contents of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report on Russian collusion. Mueller handed in his report on Friday after a two-year investigation. Congress may be briefed on its contents Sunday afternoon.
Finney added that “how vigorously Republicans will fight to make sure we see the full report will say a lot about their integrity.” Earlier on the show, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) joined House Judiciary Chair Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) in calling for the release of the full Mueller report.
Trump has not yet weighed in on the report.
