The stalling of aid to Ukraine will most likely be the focus of this week’s Sunday shows.
The Senate adjourned Wednesday without a deal on Ukraine funding at the end of a historically unproductive legislative session. GOP senators said earlier this week that there was not a possibility that a deal would happen before Christmas.
“We’re clearly not going to have text complete this week to be able to have a vote to be able to pull this stuff together. We’ll keep working until we get it done,” Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla) said Monday. “We’re all going to be back in January on this, but it’s going to take a while to be able to finish up all the text.”
Last week, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) predicted that it would be “practically impossible” to pass military aid to Ukraine before Christmas.
“All I have said is [it’s] practically impossible, even though we reach an agreement, to craft it, get it through the Senate, get it through the House before Christmas,” McConnell said. “Doesn’t mean it’s not important.”
McConnell faced pressure from conservatives like Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) to wait on saying yes to a deal with Democrats until the House comes back from its break in January. Johnson will make an appearance on Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures” this weekend.
As the Iowa caucuses near, a Tuesday decision by the Colorado Supreme Court that kicked former President Trump off of the Centennial State’s Republican primary ballot shook up the 2024 presidential race.
Colorado’s highest court pushed the former president off the ballot under the 14th Amendment’s “insurrection clause” in a 4-3 ruling. It affirmed that Trump engaged in insurrection by inflaming his supporters with false claims of election fraud and directing them to the Capitol.
Entrepreneur and 2024 GOP presidential primary candidate Vivek Ramaswamy will also make an appearance on “Sunday Morning Features” this weekend. Ramaswamy made a pledge in the wake of the Colorado ruling Tuesday to “withdraw” from the GOP primary ballot.
“I pledge to withdraw from the Colorado GOP primary unless Trump is also allowed to be on the state’s ballot, and I demand that Ron DeSantis, Chris Christie, and Nikki Haley to do the same immediately — or else they are tacitly endorsing this illegal maneuver which will have disastrous consequences for our country,” Ramaswamy said in a statement, calling out his fellow candidates in the GOP presidential primary.
“This is what an *actual* attack on democracy looks like: in an un-American, unconstitutional, and *unprecedented* decision, a cabal of Democrat judges are barring Trump from the ballot in Colorado,” Ramaswamy said.
