Dayton mayor: Quick police response saved ‘hundreds’ of lives
The mayor of Dayton, Ohio said Sunday that her city could have had “hundreds of lost lives” if police were slower in responding to a mass shooting earlier that morning.
“In under a minute, the Dayton Police Department had the situation under control,” Nan Whaley (D) said on ABC’s “This Week.”

“This is a safe area of the city where thousands of people come every evening to enjoy with friends and young people,” she added. “It’s one of the most diverse parts of Dayton and we have to start asking the question of why is Dayton the 250th mass shooting this year in our country.”

At least nine people were killed in an entertainment district when a man shooting a .223-caliber rifle with extra magazines and wearing body armor opened fire around 1 a.m. The shooting came less than 24 hours after 20 people were shot and killed in an El Paso, Texas, Walmart.
