White House trade adviser says Chinese tariffs are not hurting US

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said on Sunday that the Trump administration’s tariffs on China are not hurting U.S. consumers or famers, despite widespread warnings from other economists.

“We’re in a situation where consumers have not been hurt, China is bearing the entire burden,” Navarro said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“That’s not what the experts say,” host Jake Tapper pushed back.

“That’s what this expert says,” Navarro replied.

{mosads}President Trump has placed tariffs on Chinese goods amid an escalating trade war between the two nations.

Navarro said the tariffs are working because China is “slashing prices” and “hemorrhaging” manufacturing.

He also said Trump is “committed to standing up to China” and will “continue to do what needs to be done.”

Tapper, however, noted that “economist after economist” is claiming otherwise.

“Why are all these people lying and you’re telling the truth?” Tapper asked.

“All I would say is look at the data, there is absolutely no evidence,” Navarro said, without addressing specific arguments.

“We are winning.”

Navarro on CBS’s “Face the Nation” repeated his claim that the Chinese “have borne the entire burden” of tariffs levied by the U.S., despite concerns from some economists that the ongoing trade war has exacerbated economic instability.
