House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) on Sunday said President Trump’s decision to commute the sentence of his former adviser, Roger Stone, “should be offensive to you if you care about rule of law and you care about justice.”
“I think anyone who cares about the rule of law in this country is nauseated by the fact that the president has commuted the sentence of someone who willfully lied to Congress, covered up for the president, intimidated witnesses, obstructed the investigation,” Schiff said on ABC’s “This Week.”
“It shouldn’t matter whether you’re a Democrat or Republican, this should be offensive to you if you care about rule of law and you care about justice,” he said.
{mosads} Schiff added: “The president through this commutation is saying if you lie for me, if you cover up for me, if you have my back, then I will make sure you get a get out of jail free card. Other Americans, different standard. Friends of the president, accomplices of the president, they get off scot free.”
Trump on Friday commuted Stone’s sentence, just days before he was set to report to prison.
Stone was one of six Trump associates to be charged in connection with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the Trump campaign’s contacts with Russia.
He was convicted in November by a jury in Washington, D.C., of all counts he faced, including lying to Congress in connection with its separate investigation into Russian interference, witness tampering and obstructing an official proceeding.
