Democrats’ push to secure funding for the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) amid a projected increase in mail-in voting and the Democratic National Convention are topics expected to dominate the Sunday talk show circuit this weekend.
Democrats have proposed $25 billion in additional funding for the USPS in House’s latest coronavirus stimulus package passed in May. The funding would help with the large influx of mail expected around the November election.
However, President Trump has repeatedly claimed, without evidence, that increased mail-in voting could lead to fraud. Trump said Thursday that he wouldn’t sign a bill with funding for the Postal Service because it would allow for the expansion of mail-in voting in November.
On Friday, Trump changed course slightly, saying he would approve money for USPS as part of the coronavirus relief package, but only if Democrats made concessions on certain White House priorities. White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, a former congressman whose been involved in coronavirus relief bill negotiations, is booked on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D), who announced this week that his state will move to predominantly mail-in voting, is booked on “Fox News Sunday.”
Next week marks the start of the Democratic National Convention, which will take place predominantly online and feature speakers from all corners of the party’s ideological spectrum.
Progressive firebrand Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is one of several former White House hopefuls speaking at the convention. He is booked on ABC’s “This Week,” NBC’s “Meet the Press” and CNN’s “State of the Union.”
This week former Vice President Joe Biden announced that Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) would be his running mate. The announcement sparked attacks from the Trump campaign and supporters, who have pushed the racist “birther” theory that Harris is not qualified to run for the office of vice president.
White House adviser Jared Kushner, who has defended the president on his comments about Harris, is booked on CBS’ “Face the Nation” and Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures.”
The president is booked on “America This Week” with Eric Bolling.
