Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Sunday laughed off a question about whether she would run for reelection in 2022, saying she would consult with her family before making her decision public.
Pelosi appeared surprised when CNN’s “State of the Union” host Jake Tapper asked about whether she would run again for her congressional seat, which she has held since 1987.
“I do want to ask about your own future in Congress. Are you going to run for reelection?” Tapper asked.
“Oh, you think I’m going to make an announcement right here and now?” she responded.
The California Democrat has been mum about her future in Congress and whether she would seek the Speaker’s gavel if Democrats retain their majority in the 2022 midterm elections.
House Democrats agitated for change to their party’s leadership following their loss of the chamber in 2016 and then losing 13 seats in 2020 after predictions indicated major gains. It created one of the slimmest Democratic majorities in decades at 222 seats to 212 for Republicans.
Pelosi won the Speakership again in an unexpectedly dramatic vote for the fourth time in January, which she has promised would be her last.
“You’re going to run for reelection, though, yes?” Tapper asked again on Sunday.
“Why would I tell you that now?” Pelosi responded. “Probably, I would have that conversation with my family first, if you don’t mind.”
