‘¡Síganme los buenos!’ Google Doodle celebrates Mexican comedian Chespirito

Google is honoring famed Mexican comedian Roberto Gómez Bolaños, also known as “Chespirito,” on what would have been his 91st birthday.

Friday’s Google Doodle — the graphic or animation that headlines the search engine for the day — features a retro-themed image of Gómez Bolaños reminiscent of his long-running “Chespirito” comedy sketch show.

The show, which ran in a few different formats from 1968 to 1995, became hugely influential in Mexico and across the Spanish-speaking world, including among U.S. Hispanics.

The Doodle is visible throughout most of Latin America, the United States, Italy and Iceland, according to Google.

Google “doodler” Helene Leroux, the graphic’s designer, said the company had previously published a Doodle celebrating a “Chespirito” spin-off, “El Chavo,” but Friday’s design was meant to celebrate Gómez Bolaños himself.

“Chespirito” featured sketches with recurring characters who popularized Gómez Bolaños’s satirical turns of phrase among millions of Spanish speakers.

Gómez Bolaños’s nickname, “Chespirito” was a Mexicanized diminutive of “Shakespeare” bestowed by a film director for Gómez Bolaños’s writing prowess.
