CNN’s Stelter: Media failed to address climate change in La. flood coverage
CNN media correspondent Brian Stelter said the media has to connect the dots between climate change and the flooding devastating Louisiana.
{mosads}”It’s got to be connected to climate change,” Stelter said during an interview with Slate meteorologist Eric Holthaus on his media affairs program “Reliable Sources.” “It’s got to be pointed out that there is evidence that these are happening more often due to climate change and are more extreme due to climate change.”
Holthaus agreed earlier in the interview that the media largely missed climate change as part of the narrative of the worst natural disaster to hit the U.S. since Hurricane Sandy.
“I think that this is the sort of disaster that we’re going to start seeing more of,” Holthaus said. “That’s what worries me, really.”
“That’s what the underlying story here is that’s missed,” he continued. “I think even still today, is that we have sort an anonymous storm, hitting a relatively anonymous place that’s been hit by a lot of disasters.”
A report last week by the New York Times, where Stelter formerly worked, said many experts believe that the Louisiana flooding, along with other record floods in recent months, is due to increased rainfall caused by climate change. The report, however, could not definitively conclude the connection between this weather event and climate change.
President Obama has not made any public statements on the flooding but will visit the state on Tuesday on his second day back from his Martha’s Vineyard annual vacation.
Republican nominee Donald Trump and running mate Mike Pence visited Louisiana on Friday.
Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton says she won’t visit the area until she’s certain relief efforts won’t be hampered by her presence.
