After a long legal career, Rep.-elect Teresa Leger Fernandez will be keeping New Mexico’s 3rd District blue.
Leger Fernandez won the seat held by Rep. Ben Ray Luján (D). Luján won his election for Senate and will replace retiring Sen. Tom Udall (R-N.M.).
Leger Fernandez has operated Leger Law and Strategy for 30 years and worked on community development, tribal advocacy, civil rights and social justice issues. She has also served as a White House fellow under former President Clinton and as vice chair of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation under former President Obama.
Leger Fernandez ran a progressive campaign that advocated for a “New Mexico Green New Deal,” “Medicare for All” and gun reform. She has been endorsed by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Deb Haaland (D-N.M.).
