Cleo Fields is returning to Congress to represent a newly redrawn, Democratic-leaning district in Louisiana.

Fields replaces former Rep. Garret Graves, a Republican who didn’t seek reelection amid the redistricting effort that reshaped the district.

Fields, who has been serving his second stint in the Louisiana Senate since 2019, previously was elected a state lawmaker in 1987 at the age of 24.

He was elected to represent Louisiana’s 4th Congressional District in 1992, becoming the youngest member of the 103rd Congress at age 29. He served in that role until 1997, when his district was dissolved into another under redistricting.

Fields defeated Republican former state Sen. Elbert Guillory in the 2024 election.

Fields’s campaign focused on raising the federal minimum wage and working in rural communities.

Fields unsuccessfully ran for Louisiana governor in 1995.
