The chamber approved a two-step continuing resolution (CR) in 314-108 vote hours after the Senate cleared the measure, which extends the looming government funding deadlines to March 1 and 8. 

The short-term spending bill buys lawmakers more time to finish the formal appropriations process. This is the third CR Congress has approved in fiscal year 2024. 

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) was able to cut a deal with congressional leadership and sell enough members of his conference on the proposal to clear the chamber. 

But Johnson had to rely on Democratic support to get the bill over the finish line, with just two Democrats voting against the measure. Some congressional Republicans were critical of the lack of spending cuts and border security policy in the proposal. 

Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was ousted after he made a similar decision to pass the first CR last fall.  

Johnson — who has been speaker for just 85 days — has pledged to fight for conservative policy riders in the 12 annual appropriations bills, but he will have to balance Democrats who control the Senate and White House and hardline Republicans who came out against the topline spending deal Johnson struck with Democrats earlier this month. 

“I think we’ll be able to get our policy riders and our policy changes,” he told CNN in an interview Wednesday night. 

Despite threats from Reps. Chip Roy (R-Texas) and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) to bring a motion to vacate, Johnson’s speakership does not seem to be in serious jeopardy.
