Secretary of State Antony Blinken will urge Turkey and Hungary to ratify Sweden’s accession to NATO at a meeting in Oslo, Norway, next week, according to the State Department.

From The Hill’s Laura Kelly: “Sweden, along with Finland, was prompted to join the alliance in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Finland was granted accession to the alliance in April.”

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has been unwilling to ratify Sweden due to grievances over the country’s criticism of Orban’s policies.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who faces a runoff election against challenger Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu on Sunday, alleges Stockholm has harbored terrorists associated with Kurdish militant groups.

The Biden administration announced a national plan to end gender-based violence, which it defined as “any harmful threat or act directed at an individual or group based on actual or perceived sex, gender, gender identity, sex characteristics, or sexual orientation.”

The strategy includes seven pillars: prevention; support, healing, safety and well-being; economic security and housing stability; online safety; legal and justice systems; emergency preparedness and crisis response; and research and data. Read more here

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke at the U.S. Naval Academy’s commencement to graduates who “will enter the force as the U.S. has increased its presence in the Indo-Pacific amid heightened tensions with China,” The Hill’s Julia Mueller and Brad Dress wrote. Austin discussed U.S. seapower and teamwork in the Indo-Pacific region in his speech Friday.
