Trump on Wednesday is set to release his AI Action Plan, which will be structured around three core pillars, according to a preview obtained by The Hill.
The first key pillar is accelerating AI innovation. This includes removing regulatory barriers to the technology’s development.
The Trump administration’s focus on innovation is no surprise. The White House quickly established in January that it was eschewing the Biden administration’s focus on regulation.
Trump rescinded former President Biden’s executive order focused on AI guardrails within days of taking office, and Vice President Vance slammed “excessive regulation of the AI sector” during his first international appearance.
The administration’s plan to take aim at AI regulations also includes state rules that it deems too restrictive. It seeks to target these rules by restricting federal AI funds and tasking the Federal Communications Commission with determining whether they run afoul of its mandate.
It also seeks revisions to a federal AI risk framework to remove references to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), misinformation and climate change.
The second pillar of the AI Action Plan is building out AI infrastructure. This calls for streamlining permitting for data center construction and enhancing the cybersecurity of critical infrastructure.
This has also been a clear priority in the first six months of the administration, with Trump touting numerous large-scale private investments to expand AI infrastructure, including the $500 billion Stargate project.
The president was in Pennsylvania last week to tout $92 billion in energy and data center investments from companies like Google, Coreweave and Blackstone.
The final piece of Trump’s plan is leading on international AI diplomacy and security. This consists of exporting American AI technology and countering Chinese influence, a key concern in Washington as the U.S. and China vie for dominance in the field.
The AI framework is reportedly set to be accompanied by a trio of executives orders targeting “woke” AI, boosting the export of U.S. technology and easing data center construction.
