Listen: Coastal states push back on offshore drilling expansion, and today’s latest news

Coastal states want to forestall new offshore drilling by emulating Florida’s successful lobbying effort at the Interior Department. 

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke announced Tuesday that he wouldn’t allow offshore drilling in waters near Florida after meeting with Gov. Rick Scott (R) to discuss the governor’s objections to the policy.

Following the decision, governors of nearly all states along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts have joined Scott in calling for their shores to be removed from Zinke’s plan, but Zinke has not ruled any other area out at this stage in the process. 
 
Zinke’s proposal last week marked the first step in the process to expand offshore drilling along the U.S. coast.
