The Sony hack blame game generator
A trio of clever computer scientists have created a site for the conspiracy theorist in all of us — the “Sony Hack Attribution Generator.”
With a quick refresh, you get a fresh, detailed and intelligent-looking explanation for why anyone from the Romanian mob to a Sony system administrator is behind the devastating cyber assault.
{mosads}“Everybody is talking about the Sony hack,” the site’s creators said. “Who did it? Why did they do it? Each theory more uninformed than the last.”
For those not in the know, Sony Pictures Entertainment was hit with a cyberattack in late November. The cyber campaign brought down its computer network, exposed large swaths of internal documents and caused the studio to briefly pause the release of a multi-million dollar comedy, “The Interview.”
The FBI has pinned the attack on North Korea, arguing the hit was retaliation for film, which depicts a bumbling American plot to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
But a wide array of cyber experts have also weighed in, poking holes in the government’s official narrative and offering their own conflicting theories.
“Surely you can’t admit in public that you don’t know anything about how the attack was executed or who is behind the whole thing,” the creators said. “Do you need a quick story you can pull out of your butt to explain the Sony hack at a party or job interview? Then just fire up this bad boy!”
The explanations do indeed draw on names, quotes and information from top cybersecurity firms and noted security experts. To convince your more technically-savvy friends, they also include IP addresses of possible hackers and code-based “evidence” discovered in the malware used during the attack.
In short, it looks legit. But remember — it’s all a joke.
Alex Pinto, one of the three people behind the site, drove the point home on Twitter: “#CyberSecurity company needing PR on #SonyHack? No actual evidence to analyze? Use the Sony Attribution Generator!”
