Report: Donald Trump, GOP also targeted by hackers

Donald Trump’s presidential campaign has been targeted by hackers and has contracted a security firm known for its handling of international threats, according to Reuters.

{mosads}Intelligence bulletins have identified continued attacks on Republican servers resembling the ones lodged against Democratic servers, Reuters reports. The attacks against Democrats are widely believed to have come from Russian intelligence.

There is no evidence that the Trump campaign has been breached. But out of caution, the campaign has hired Crowdstrike, a firm known for cleanup and forensic work after a server has been breached. Hillary Clinton’s campaign has hired a similar firm as a precaution.

Crowdstrike was the firm used by the Democratic National Committee to investigate and seal the breach believed to have connections to Russia.

The larger Republican Party has been breached in the past. A small cache of emails from Republican campaigns and state GOP parties was released on a WikiLeaks-like website that analysts have found evidence of being run by Russian Intelligence.

The Reuters report says a Trump staffer installed malware from a malicious email in 2015, which then sent similar malicious emails to other staffers. Unlike the Russian attacks on the DNC, there is no reason to believe the malware was targeted at the campaign staff or used for any political purpose.
