News, social media sites hit by global internet outage

Multiple news and social media websites were unavailable Tuesday morning, with some reports suggesting a global internet outage may have forced the sites offline.

Reuters reported that websites for The New York Times, Bloomberg News, the Financial Times and the Guardian all faced outages, but appear to be back online.

According to a photo posted by a reporter on Twitter, the Times’s website said “connection failure” during the outage.

Additionally, almost 21,000 Reddit users said they were experiencing issues with the social media platform, according to Reuters.

The British government’s website was also reportedly experiencing slow loading times and graphic issues, according to CNBC.

A number of reports are focusing on the U.S.-based cloud computing services provider Fastly. According to CNBC, the company includes a global network of servers and data centers that allows for the transfer of assets needed to load internet content.

Just before 6 a.m. EDT on Tuesday, the company wrote on its website that it was “currently investigating potential impact to performance with our CDN services.”

The website said most of Fastly’s coverage areas were facing “degraded performance.”

Nearly an hour later, the provider wrote said that the “issue has been identified and a fix has been applied.”

Reuters also reported that Amazon’s retail website appeared to be down Tuesday morning. More than 2,000 users reported issues with the website, according to outage monitoring website Downdetector.com, which was cited by the wire service.

Additionally, Amazon’s Twitch was also down, according to Downdetector.com.

The Hill reached out to the Times, Bloomberg and Amazon for comment.
