Drone strike kills at least 2 in Somalia, witnesses say

A suspected U.S. drone strike killed at least two al-Shabaab insurgents in Somalia on Monday, according to reports.

Witnesses told Reuters and al Jazeera that two al-Shabaab fighters were killed by a drone strike that struck their car in Jilib, a town south of Somali’s capital Mogadishu in the Middle Jubba region.

The U.S. does not confirm drone attacks, but has launched operations in Somalia to target Al-Shabaab, the Somali al-Qaeda affiliate that took responsibility for last month’s attack at a Narobi mall.

“This afternoon, I heard a big crash and saw a drone disappearing far into the sky, at least two militants died,” Hassan Nur, a resident in the area, told Reuters.

Earlier this month, U.S. Navy SEALs raided an al-Shabaab stronghold in Somalia in an attempt to capture Abdulkadir Mohamed Abdulkadir, an al-Shabaab commander. The SEALs aborted the raid after they could not capture him.
