Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is expected to be questioned next week by a top Pentagon official about his 2009 disappearance from his base in Afghanistan, according to multiple reports.
Bergdahl has already been introduced to Maj. Gen. Kenneth Dahl, who is in charge of investigating his case, and is expected to be questioned next week, Bergdahl’s lawyer, Eugene Fidell said, according to Reuters and CNN.
{mosads}Fidell told Reuters that Dahl is expected to complete the probe within 60 days from when he was appointed in mid-June, but said it might be extended.
“There may be an extension in this case. It’s a complicated matter with a lot of witnesses,” Fidell said.
Dahl is tasked with looking into whether Bergdahl deserted his Army post in 2009, which ultimately led to his capture by the Taliban who held him for nearly five years.
Bergdahl returned to regular duty earlier this month and was assigned to perform administrative tasks at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston.
News of the questioning next week comes after the House Armed Services Committee on Tuesday voted to condemn President Obama for the swap to get Bergdahl in late May.
He was exchanged for five Taliban prisoners who were released from Guantánamo Bay and sent to Qatar.
