There are now more refugees or internally displaced people than the population of Britain, the United Nations said Monday.

{mosads}There are a record 65 million displaced people in the world, or 1 in 113, the UN’s refugee agency said in a new report.

The figures mark a rise of 5.8 million in 2015 from the previous year, and is the first time that the threshold of 60 million has been crossed, the agency said.

The figures were released on World Refugee Day.

Although figures have been rising since the mid-1990s, they have jumped since the outbreak of Syria’s civil war in 2011.

Of the 65.3 million, 21.3 million have fled their countries, and 40.8 million remain displaced inside their countries.

Palestinians are the largest group of refugees, at more than 5 million. Syrians are second, at 4.9 million, followed by Afghans at 2.7 million and Somalians at 1.1 million.

Outside the Middle East and Africa, there is also a growing number of refugees from Central America. In 2015, there was a 17 percent rise in those fleeing their homes.
