Veteran groups to participate in Trump inaugural parade

Several veterans service organizations will participate in the presidential inaugural parade next month, President-elect Donald Trump’s inaugural committee announced Friday.

Those groups include American Veterans (AmVets), Disabled American Veterans, Paralyzed Veterans of America, and Wounded Warrior Project, according to the committee. Those groups did not participate in inaugural parades for President Obama, according to previous lineups, although other veterans groups marched in Obama’s inauguration.

“People from every corner of the country have expressed great interest in President-elect Trump’s inauguration and look forward to continuing a salute to our republic that spans more than two centuries,” said committee CEO Sara Armstrong.

{mosads}“As participants follow in the footsteps of our new president and vice president down Pennsylvania Avenue, they will be adding their names to the long list of Americans who have honored our country by marching in the inaugural parade,” she said.

The committee said there will be more than 8,000 parade participants representing 40 organizations, including high school and university marching bands, equestrian corps, first responders and veterans groups.

The U.S. Border Patrol Pipes & Drums will also participate in the parade. The group participated in the 2009 parade for Obama, but not in 2013.

An NBC4 Washington report earlier this month said no marching bands from schools in the Washington, D.C., area have applied to perform in the parade, despite at least one band from the capital’s public school system marching in the past five inaugural parades.

“We are honored to have been invited by the Inaugural Committee to participate in the parade and are humbled to represent this generation of wounded veterans who have sacrificed so much for this country,” the Wounded Warrior Project said in a statement to The Hill.

The list released by the committee on Friday did not include any D.C.-area public school marching bands.
