A majority of Republicans, 60 percent, oppose allowing transgender people to serve in the military.
Trump announced on Twitter earlier this month the military would “not accept or allow” transgender people to serve “in any capacity.” He said he made the decision after consultation with “my generals and military experts.”
A day after the announcement, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford said the military would not implement the ban until it receives an official directive from Trump.
Earlier this week, 56 retired generals and admirals came out against Trump’s ban on transgender troops, arguing it would be disruptive and degrade military readiness.
The Quinnipiac poll was conducted from July 27 to Aug. 1 among 1,125 voters. The margin of error is 3.4 percent.
