Military orders inventory probe at eight Air Force bases after grenades disappear

Military officials have reportedly ordered a command-wide inventory and investigation after a box of grenades and a machine gun from an Air Force base in North Dakota went missing.

CNN reported Friday that the inventory will seek to account for grenades, small arms, machine guns, rifles and pistols at eight bases under the Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC). 

The AFGSC did not immediately respond to The Hill’s request for comment about the reported inventory.

At the same time, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have been called to examine the matter, CNN reported. 

The inventory was ordered Thursday, after an M-240 machine gun was counted as missing during a routine inventory at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota. 

Earlier this month, a box of explosive grenade rounds from the base went missing after it apparently fell off the back of a vehicle while it was driving down gravel roads in North Dakota.

The Air Force dispersed more than 100 airmen to search the six-mile route where the high-caliber explosive rounds were thought to have fallen. That search ended without recovering the grenades.

The AFGSC is responsible for the United States’s three intercontinental ballistic missile wings as well as the Air Force’s bomber force, including the B-1, B-2 and B-52 bombers.
