A member of the U.S.- and NATO-led military coalition in Afghanistan was killed Monday in an attack believed to have been carried out by a member of the Afghan security forces, officials said.

A statement from Resolute Support said one service member was killed and two others injured in the attack in Herat province in western Afghanistan.

{mosads}“Initial reports indicate the attack was committed by a member of the Afghan security forces,” the coalition’s statement said.

The statement did not include the nationalities of those killed and wounded. Pentagon spokesman Col. Rob Manning later said the deceased service member is not American.

“Further details will be shared after the appropriate national authorities have followed their processes for releasing information,” the coalition statement said.

Monday’s apparent insider attack comes days after an insider attack during a high-level meeting in Kandahar killed regional police chief Gen. Abdul Raziq and intelligence chief Gen. Abdul Momin.

The top U.S. general in Afghanistan, Gen. Scott Miller, was in the room for the Thursday attack. Miller drew his weapon, but was unhurt. Another U.S. officer, Army Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Smiley, was wounded in the attack.

The violence comes amid Afghanistan’s parliamentary elections. Most of the country cast their ballots over the weekend, though Kandahar’s polling has been delayed after last week’s attack.

The Taliban had warned Afghans against voting and launched about 250 attacks, killing at least 50 people across the country over the two days of voting.

“By casting your votes, you sent a clear message to the world that you do not want violence. You demonstrated your determination through democracy,” Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said in an address Sunday. “You proved to the Taliban that this nation will not surrender to anyone.”
