Mattis: Trump decides where he goes, but I’ve advised against some trips
Defense Secretary James Mattis said Wednesday that President Trump decides where to travel overseas, but added that he has advised the president against visiting certain locations due to security concerns.
“The president’s the commander in chief and he decides where he needs to go,” Mattis told reporters at the Pentagon, according to the Washington Examiner. “There are times I don’t want him in certain locations, to be frank with you, for his security and the troops’ security.”
{mosads}Mattis’s comments come as Trump has faced increasing criticism in recent days for never visiting U.S. troops in Iraq or Afghanistan.
The president has responded by saying several times that he plans to visit service members in a combat zone, but he has declined to say where or when a trip will take place.
“Well, I think you will see that happen,” he said about visiting troops in Iraq or Afghanistan. “There are things that are being planned. We don’t want to talk about it because of — obviously because of security reasons and everything else.”
