West Point identifies cadet who died in training exercise

The U.S. Military Academy on Friday identified the cadet killed this week in a training exercise. 

Cadet Christopher J. Morgan, 22, who was part of the class of 2020, died from injuries he received in a military vehicle accident, according to a West Point statement. 

“Cadet Morgan was a valued member of the Corps of Cadets and will be missed by all. The entire community is ensuring that our cadets are being cared for physically, emotionally, and spiritually,” said academy superintendent Lt. Gen. Darryl A. Williams in the statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Morgan family.”

The statement said Morgan was studying law and legal studies and was also on the Army wrestling team.  

“We are devastated by the news of Chris’ passing. He was a talented, hardworking, and determined athlete who loved his sport,” said Army West Point Wrestling Coach Kevin Ward in the statement. “Chris had an infectious personality with a smile big enough to fill any room, and a heart big enough to love everyone around him. He made everyone around him better and he will be greatly missed.”

Morgan will be honored Friday with a vigil. A memorial ceremony for the West Point community and a private funeral will be conducted at the academy next week. 

Morgan was killed and 21 others were injured in the accident that involved a light medium tactical vehicle Thursday morning.
