Thad Allen: ‘Static kill’ of BP well could begin by weekend
The static kill is a cousin of the “top kill” procedure that failed to contain the oil-and-gas gusher in late May. It involves pumping heavy drilling mud into the well and capping it with cement, but that didn’t work weeks ago when the tremendous well pressure kept effectively spitting the materials back out.
But BP has installed a tight-fitting containment cap that succeeded in blocking the oil flow last week and could enable the procedure to succeed this time.
Allen said more discussions with scientists analyzing the well are planned Wednesday.
