Train carrying crude derails in Canada

A freight train carrying crude oil and propane derailed in Canada late Tuesday, the Associated Press reports.

{mosads}The fires set off by the accident continued burning into Wednesday morning, after over 100 residents were evacuated from their homes. No deaths or injuries were reported.

“The biggest concern is the propane cars,” fire chief of nearby community Plaster Rock, Tim Corbin, said Wednesday morning, according to CBC News. “That’s our biggest concern because if they happen to explode, we’re looking at major damage.”

It is the latest in a string of derailments over the past six months. Last week a train carrying crude oil derailed in North Dakota, setting 21 railcars ablaze.

Tuesday’s derailment in New Brunswick added to the mounting concerns over increasing use of rail to transport oil throughout North America.

The cause of the derailment is still under investigation.
