Steyer to push campaign against Keystone with Senate Dems

Billionaire hedge fund manager turned climate activist Tom Steyer plans to tell Senate Democrats on Wednesday night that opposition to the Keystone XL oil pipeline will rally voters behind their party.

Steyer is hosting a “Blue Green Council Dinner” fundraiser for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee at his San Francisco home, according to one of his advisers, The Washington Post reports.

{mosads}During the dinner, Steyer will share data from a poll he commissioned that says voters care where the oil transported through the proposed pipeline ends up and whether Chinese investors gain from the project.

Those in attendance at the meeting include Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.), Sheldon Whitehouse (R.I.), Patrick Leahy (Vt.) and Ben Cardin (Md.). Sens. Mark Udall (Colo.), Jeanne Shaheen (N.H.) and Jeff Merkley (Ore.), who are all up for reelection this year, will also be at the meeting.

Steyer will publicly release the poll results on Thursday.

On Tuesday, The New York Times reported that Steyer plans to funnel $100 million into races this year in the hopes of getting environmentally friendly candidates into office.
