Miners make final push for Grimes in Kentucky

The United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) is holding two rallies this week to encourage pro-coal voters to come out in support of Democratic Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes on Election Day.

The two events will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday in Madisonville, and Pikeville, Ky., according to the UMWA.

{mosads}”Alison Grimes doesn’t just care about coal, she is the only candidate in this race who cares about coal miners,” Cecil Roberts, international president of UMWA, said in a statement.

“She cares about their health and safety when they’re working. She cares about preserving the pensions and health care retired coal miners earned through years of backbreaking work. She supports active and retired miners and their families, and we support her,” Roberts added.

Roberts will be joined by Grimes, who is running against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), at both rallies.

The administration’s climate agenda, called a “war on coal” by McConnell, has been a prominent talking point throughout the tight race.

McConnell, who is maintaining a lead in most public polls, has sought to tether Grimes to Obama’s proposal to cut carbon pollution from power plants.

The UMWA first endorsed Grimes in August, and the Democratic hopeful has slammed the administration from the beginning over its climate policies.
