Energy Dept hands out LED research funds

The Department of Energy has given out more than $8 million to advance research into light-emitting diodes (LED).

Nine research and development projects nationwide have won a total of $8.2 million to study solid-state lighting technologies like LED, the Energy Department announced Monday. Funding will go toward technology research, product development and manufacturing and projects include higher-output and more efficient LEDs, color display accuracy and how to integrate the lighting into classrooms.

In a statement, Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said the research is “critically important for moving the nation closer to a clean energy future, while keeping money in the pocketbooks of American families at the same time.”

The research announced Monday was the tenth round of solid-state lighting research projects funded by the Energy Department.
