Washington Monument closed indefinitely
The Washington Monument will be closed indefinitely until issues with its elevator are fixed.
National Park Service officials announced the decision Monday, citing “ongoing reliability issues” with the 555-foot monument’s lone elevator. They said they were unable to determine the cause of the problems despite a monthlong investigation.
{mosads}“As a result, we have made the difficult decision not to reopen the Washington Monument until we can modernize the elevator control system,” they said, according to The Washington Post.
A Park Service spokesman told the newspaper that it would be a “long-term closure” that would last for “months” but was not more specific.
The monument has been closed repeatedly in recent months over issues with the elevator.
The obelisk suffered damage in a 2011 earthquake. It was reopened in 2014 after repairs.
