Hatch: Let’s look at unauthorized workers, tax credits
The Treasury Department’s Inspector General for Tax Administration report, released Thursday, found that unauthorized workers’ claims for the child credit had risen swiftly, with claims standing at $924 billion in 2005.
{mosads}The IRS has agreed to consult with the Treasury Department on the matter, but has also said that it does not believe the agency has the authority to keep unauthorized workers from claiming the credit.
“The law has been clear for over a decade that eligibility for these credits does not depend on work authorization status,” Michelle Eldridge, an IRS spokeswoman, said in a statement this week.
