Unions try to regroup after UAW fails in Tennessee

The AFL-CIO is vowing to fight on after it suffered a major blow on Friday by failing to organize workers at a Volkswagen plant in Tennessee.

President Richard Trumka told The Wall Street Journal that the unions are not giving up on the South after the United Auto Workers lost the unionization drive.

“We continue on. That was just round one,” he said.

{mosads}Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) was a major force behind the anti-unionization effort and said he was “thrilled” by the outcome.

The article notes the AFL-CIO is also hurt by the retirements of two of its biggest champions in Congress, Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) and Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.)
