The European Union on Friday announced 12 new targets for financial and visa sanctions in response to Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea region.
Leading the list are top officials: Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Dmitry Rogozin; Sergey Glazyev, adviser to the President Vladimir Putin; Federation Council speaker Valentina Ivanova Matviyenko; and Duma Speaker Sergey Yevgenyevich Naryshkin.
{mosads}Also on the list is state news agency Rossiya Segodnya, news agency head Dmitry Konstantinovich Kiselyov and Alexander Mihailovich Nosatov, the deputy commander of Russia’s Black Sea fleet.

The EU decided late Thursday to hold off on broader sanctions on Russia, one of the EU’s top trading partners and a top energy supplier. The new EU list does not target businessmen.
On Thursday, President Obama authorized sanctions for 20 new Russian officials and businessmen including the head of the largest Russian oil trading firm, Gunvor. The U.S. has also sanctioned the 17th largest bank in Russia, Bank Rossiya.
The White House has also promulgated an executive order opening up the possibility of broad sanctions on entire Russian economic sectors if Russia takes more agressive actions such as an invasion of the rest of Ukraine.
