DC ranks No. 1 in terms of wealth, study finds

The District of Columbia outranks all 50 states in terms of wealth, according to a study released Wednesday by WalletHub.

It ranked the United States from richest to poorest, including Washington, D.C., with the findings based on income, GDP per capita, which measures living standards, and federal taxes per capita.

Wealth is often measured by net worth — the value of the items someone owns minus his or her debts.

D.C. ranked sixth in terms of income and came in first for GDP per capita and federal taxes per capita.

The district also ranked first in terms of the highest percent of households making at least $200,000 a year. It also ranked last for the lowest percent of households making between $25,000 and $49,999 and households making between $50,000 and $99,999.

New Jersey also came in at the top of the list, but did not rank first for GDP per capita and federal taxes per capita. Connecticut and Maryland came in third. Mississippi, West Virginia and Alabama ranked at the bottom of the list.

WalletHub conducted its analysis using data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
