White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Friday that the administration is still “waiting to see the details” on the government funding bill being prepared by Congress.
As he has stated for the last two days, Earnest said he wouldn’t discuss whether President Obama would veto the funding bill.
{mosads}But he reiterated several times that the White House believes it’s the “basic responsibility” of Congress to “do only what they’re supposed to do” and pass a full-year budget for the federal government.
House Republicans are considering a plan to fund the government through the fiscal year but have said they only want to fund the Department of Homeland Security through March. That agency handles immigration, and Republicans are furious with Obama’s executive actions giving legal status to millions of workers living in the U.S. illegally.
The plan has split Democrats, though Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has signaled his support.
The government will shut down on Dec. 12 without a new funding bill.
