McCarthy says he and Boehner disagree on Ex-Im
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said he and Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) disagree over the Export-Import Bank.
McCarthy wants to kill the bank, while Boehner argues it should be extended beyond June 30.
{mosads}“This is a place the speaker and I disagree upon,” McCarthy told The Daily Signal, which is funded by Heritage Foundation. “I think this is an opportunity to wind down the bank because I think private sector can fill that void.”
It is unclear whether the House will vote to extend the bank, despite Boehner’s support.
Conservative Republicans backed by outside groups like Heritage Action argue it is a form of corporate welfare.
Supporters argue the bank helps create and sustain U.S. jobs by financing overseas investments that lead to increased U.S. trade.
Boehner told reporters last month that “there are thousands of jobs on the line that would disappear pretty quickly if the Ex-Im Bank were to disappear.”
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has said he will move a bill through the Senate despite his personal opposition to it.
