Poll: Nearly 40 percent say they have been affected by shutdown firsthand

Nearly 40 percent of Americans have been affected firsthand by the government shutdown, according to a poll released Tuesday.

Thirty-eight percent of respondents to the Reuters survey said that either their family had lost some income — or expected to — or relied on government services that had been shut down, or else they personally knew someone who met those conditions.

{mosads}Thirty-eight percent of those surveyed said the shutdown has not affected them, and 25 percent were unsure.

Reuters surveyed 2,343 adults between Jan. 8 and 14. The margin of error for the survey is 2 percentage points.

An estimated 800,000 workers have been furloughed or are working without pay in the 25-day shutdown.

The government has been partially shutdown since Dec. 22 over disagreements between Trump and congressional Democrats over the president’s demand for $5 billion in new funding for border security.

The Trump administration doubled their estimate of the financial damage the shutdown will cause Tuesday.
