Support in the U.S. for free trade has hit an all-time high, according to a poll released Sunday.
Sixty-four percent of Americans surveyed in an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll said free trade is good. It is a 7-point uptick since a 2017 poll and an all-time high, according to the NBC/WSJ survey data.
Twenty-seven percent of Americans said free trade is bad, a 10-point decrease since 2017.{mosads}
The increased support for free trade follows the Trump administration increasing tariffs on a growing number of Chinese goods amid an escalating trade war between the two nations.
While the conflict has driven fears the trade war is hurting the U.S. economy, as well as American farmers and consumers, and could lead to a recession, Trump administration officials have pushed back on warnings, claiming tariffs are only hurting China.
The poll surveyed 1,000 adults between Aug. 10 and 14. There is a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
