Tech rally boosts stock markets
U.S. stock markets closed with major gains on Monday, as technology firms such as Netflix and Amazon rallied.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 460 points, or 1.8 percent, while the S&P 500 closed up 50 points, or 1.6 percent.
The tech-heavy NASDAQ was up 226, or 2.2 percent.
Among tech companies, Netflix gained 3.6 percent, while Facebook gained 2.9 percent.
Investors cast aside their concerns over spiking COVID-19 cases, which set new records in a handful of states over the past week.
Texas, for example, hit a record 8,258 new cases on Saturday, and has reversed course on its recent decisions to quickly reopen restaurants and bars. The state also instituted a mask mandate as hospitals in the Houston area warned that they were reaching capacity.
Still, stock traders, flush with cash from low interest rates and a slew of easing measures from the Federal Reserve, have continued to bet on a strong, swift recovery.
