Stocks rise in final days of 2020

Stock markets rose in early trading Wednesday, nearing records set earlier in the week as 2020 nears its close.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 95 points, or 0.3 percent, and the S&P 500 was up 12 points, or 0.3 percent.

Markets rebounded to fresh highs earlier in the week after President Trump belatedly signed a $2.3 trillion government funding and COVID-19 stimulus bill.

Congress had approved the bill the previous Monday, but Trump delayed signing it while raising complaints on the amount of direct payments and certain federal spending.

The slow pace of vaccine delivery has raised concerns among some about how quickly the pandemic can come to an end and allow the economy to fully recover.

But historically low interest rates and expectations that vaccines will pave the way for an economic turnaround in 2021 have kept markets frothy at year’s end, a period that typically sees gains for equities.
