Progressive group launches $2M ad campaign to call for tax hikes on the rich

The progressive group Tax March announced Monday that it’s launching a $2 million ad campaign that urges Congress to raise taxes on wealthy individuals and large corporations.

Tax March said it is kicking off the campaign with an event Tuesday in New York City’s Times Square, where it will unveil a billboard. The group is also launching TV and digital ads that will run nationwide, especially in Washington, D.C., Wisconsin, Iowa and New York. 

The campaign makes the case for raising taxes on the wealthy and corporations by highlighting the space-flight activities of billionaires such as Jeff Bezos.

“If you can afford to launch yourself into space, you can pay your fair share in taxes,” a narrator says in the TV ad.

Tax March’s campaign comes as President Biden and congressional Democrats are seeking to raise taxes on high-income households and corporations in order to offset the cost of a spending package focused on issues such as health care, education and clean energy incentives. Doing so could be challenging, because no Republicans are expected to support tax increases and some Democratic lawmakers have raised concerns about some of the tax-increase proposals Biden floated earlier this year.

“These economic packages are an opportunity to start rooting out income inequality to create a fair economy for all Americans,” Tax March Executive Director Maura Quint said in a statement. “It’s time to start building from the bottom up and the middle out.”
