GOP senators ramp up anti-abortion rhetoric
Several anti-abortion lawmakers on Wednesday urged the GOP to focus on social issues this November and in 2016, arguing abortion rights supporters engage in “savagery.”
The lawmakers made the comments at a dinner sponsored by anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List, according to The Associated Press.
“One of the biggest prizes in 2016 will be who picks the next Supreme Court judges,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said. “Wouldn’t it be wonderful to win the White House in 2016, undo ObamaCare, put America on a different path and have a president who defends little babies?”
The GOP shouldn’t be silent on abortion, Graham added.
{mosads}”We are having problems growing the Republican Party in a demographically changing America,” he said.
At the dinner, Tea Party Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) said abortion rights supporters promote a “culture of death” and participate in “savagery.”
Abortion rights supporters chanted “hail, Satan” outside the Texas state Capitol last year, said Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas).
Cruz, another Tea Party member and potential presidential candidate, said the people walked “arm-in-arm, chanting ‘Hail, Satan,’ embracing the right to take the life of a late-term child.”
The demonstration happened as the debate flared over a proposed late-term abortion ban bill. Protestors reportedly used the chant, however, to heckle a group of anti-abortion supporters.
The Susan B. Anthony List’s PAC plans to spend $10 million in this year’s midterm elections to help anti-abortion candidates, AP reports.
